Tom Collier
Tom found his musical beginnings in the Royal Wind Band Sint-Cecilia Jabbeke, where he took his first steps with Eric Jonghmans. His passion grew at the Municipal Music Academy of Bruges, where he studied clarinet with Raymond Decock and Filip Demeyere. In 2001 he chose a professional musical path at the Lemmens Institute, studying clarinet with Eddy Vanoosthuyse.
Artistic intention
My inspiration begins in nature - not only as landscape, but as inner movement. Light plays a central role: light breaking through leaves, the light of a winter sky, but also the inner light of insight, wonder and transformation, or its absence. Each composition is a search for a precise atmosphere: a sound space where imagination, emotion and meaning can meet.
Timbre is my most important building block. I explore how colours can merge, rub against each other or breathe, how contemporary techniques can open the orchestra, and how texture can become as meaningful as melody or harmony. My music moves between the impressionistic, the ritual, the cinematic and the playful.
My work looks for connection: between nature and humanity, inner experience and outward sound, tradition and contemporary expression, seriousness and imagination. I hope to create music that is not only heard, but experienced.
His musical path expanded into composition, which he studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp. In 2019 he obtained a Master in Composition with great distinction under the guidance of Wim Henderickx and Luc Van Hove. That same year, his orchestral work Spirits was selected and performed by the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra.
Tom also trained extensively as a conductor. In 2022 he completed a Master in orchestral conducting at the Lemmens Institute with Ivan Meylemans, and followed an international programme with the Atlantic Coast Orchestra in Portugal.
Today Tom combines composing and conducting with an active teaching practice. He teaches music theory and intonation at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp and composition at the Kunstacademie Torhout.
He conducts the Royal Harmony of the Congregation Izegem and the KATZ Symphony Orchestra in Torhout. He is regularly invited as a guest conductor for rehearsals and concert preparation.
Alongside his musical activities he develops interdisciplinary projects that bring music, image, movement and words into conversation.
